On 18 July, U.S. forces reached the St. Lo-Periers road, which would force the Germans out of the important city. They started infiltrating into the ruins along the eastern edge. By 1900 hours on 19 July, elements of the U.S. 29th Infantry Division and the 113th Cavalry Group had basically cleared the city in house-to-house fighting. The headquarters of the LXXXIV. Aimee-Korps was captured.

The fighting of the previous two weeks had been conducted with unimaginable intensity. In all, it took the Americans forty-four days to take the city from the time they had established their beachheads on 6 June. During the planning of "Overlord," only one week was allotted for its capture.

It then started raining, and the roads and fields were turned into quagmires. Tanks on both sides got bogged down in the muck. The low-lying clouds also did not allow any aerial activity on the part of the Allies. The fronts solidified, and both sides had an opportunity to recover somewhat.
